Scripture Reflections

The Widow of Nain
The story:
The story of the Widow of Nain in Luke’s Gospel is extraordinarily short.

In almost all cultures, we show our hospitality by offering people food. For many of us, we see food as a way to connect, we see food as a way forge relationships.

Jesus said, “All that the Father has is mine. For this reason I said that [the Spirit] will take what is mine and declare it to you”

During my holiday in the Philippines a couple of years ago, I visited some of the Holy Spirit Sisters at their convent in Manila.

Today the Church celebrates the feast of the Ascension of the Lord; the feast of our Lord’s ascension to heaven.

At his inaugural homily on the Feast of St. Joseph 2013, Pope Francis introduced a word that he has repeated time and again. That word is ‘Tenderness’!

Love, a simple word, consists of only four letters, pronounced with one syllable since the e is silent, and yet by nature requires the passionate characteristic.

Many years ago my professor in missiology went to the Holy Land to do some studies. In his course, he got invited to watch a contest between shepherds.

The loud and clear call of Jesus today, to Peter and to all of his disciples, is to feed His sheep.

I have been truly overwhelmed by the blood of so many innocent people that has been shed so insanely and viciously over the past week and more.

Easter Sunday - 2016

But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, [Mary Magdalene, Joanna, and Mary the mother of James, and the other women] came to the tomb, taking the spices that they had prepared.

Happy Easter. For a Christian, there could be no more wonderful day than this—when we shout with joy that death itself has been defeated forever — we celebrate the victory of life over death. And even more, that this victory can reach back to the very beginning of time, till the end of time.

Passion Sunday - 2016

Most of us have seen this scene in a movie, there’s a person who is strapped on an electric chair about to die.

Dear friends in Christ Jesus, the liturgy of the day highlights God’s kind heartedness towards all of us and gives ample examples of compassion

Today’s gospel, the parable of the Prodigal Son (Lk. 15, 1-3, 11-32), reveals in one unforgettable story the heart of Jesus’ teaching and mission,  namely, that God is love.
